Frequently Asked Questions

Recording

Q: What is the recording process?

When you’re already settled on the time and date of your recording, your typical recording usually goes like this: SET-UP, SOUNDCHECK, TRACKING (this is when the actual recording happens), and finally, MIXING.

There are 2 major ways to approach TRACKING/RECORDING:

“Live” – essentially, this is how they record bands in the good ol ‘days. The whole band records everything as a LIVE PERFORMANCE while they monitor their playing using headphones. This captures the feel and interplay of musicianship better. But this route requires a lot of skill from the band’s part to get that ‘perfect’ take and often results in very long studio time and takes.

“Multitracked” – Most bands take this route. It is the incremental route. Drumtracks are tackled first, so it’s imperative that it be flawless. It can be recorded either with one or two musicians or the whole band playing along. Once the drum track is perfect (or acceptable, depending on the budget), the bass track is laid down to complete the rhythm section. Then the guitars are recorded and overdubbed as necessary, building up to the finished song. Generally, vocals are laid down as the last major track, then atmospherics like backing vocals, synths, and other percussion instruments are recorded last.
Expect to overdub a lot of things.

Q: How long does recording take?

This is a pretty difficult question with no definite answer.  It may take as short as 6 minutes or as long as 6 months! But we can narrow down the culprits to…

– the budget
–  how well rehearsed/skilled the musicians’ involved are
– whether or not the material has been fully written
– how particular or meticulous the band is to their song or song parts
– the number of members to record in the band
– the song arrangement and the elements needed

But here’s a “ballpark” estimate of how long (or how short) a typical recording session goes:

Demos – usually takes two to three hours of recording per song
Vocals  – usually takes an hour or two for solo vocals and/or 3 to 4 hours for choirs.
Full Band Setup – usually takes 6 – 10 hours of recording per song

At the end of the day, it is ultimately about what you want, but try not to cram everything in one session all at once. We really feel this will not save any money in the long run.

Q: How much does it cost to have my songs recorded, mixed and mastered?

One important thing to having a successful project is to know and understand your budget.  Projects can be completed at nearly any budget. The main difference would be the quality of the end product. If budget is limited, their would be compromises such as limited takes, no pitch corrections, no in depth wave form editing, and/or limited mixing time. You can contact us ahead of your schedule and we’d be glad to help you out in maximizing your time according to your budget.

Mixing

Q: What is the mixing process?

Basically, mixing is the art of blending all the sounds recorded for a song, adding  effects and producing a stereo recording out of them.

It can be the most complicated step in the whole recording process.

Our advice, DO NOT RUSH THIS PART OF THE PROCESS!!

Each track is molded to fit the song. The mixing engineer must make sure that each instrument has it’s own place in the mix. This means that: the kick drum’s LOW end must not interfere with the Bass guitar’s; The electric guitar’s MID-range must not overpower the vocals and so on. After each track is ‘dialed in’, the whole song is run through and listened to (over and over and over and over again) for any places where special tweaking attention is needed.

Q: How long does mixing take?

A typical full band mix usually takes 6-10 hours of mixing time. Whereas a solo/duet vocal recording or a trio with an already mixed instrumental track only takes 2-4 hours.

Q: What are the basic do's and dont's of mixing?

– Do voice your opinion if you don’t like something.

– Do try to be patient. Mixing can take a long time!

– Don’t get burned out on any one song.  You’ll be hearing your song 50 or more times during mixing, so stay focused or ask the engineer to take a break when you’re almost losing your mind.

Q: I want more "me" in the mix.

Try to picture the song as a whole thing, not just a collection of individual parts. If you’ve carefully considered the interplay of all the parts, and you still think that your part should be louder, then let us know.

Always keep in mind to serve the song. Serve the song!
